Oman’s flourishing tourism in focus
 |
By Hasan Kamoonpuri -
The recently released seventh edition of Destination Oman is a good read on several counts. Apart from spotlighting several key tourist destinations of the Sultanate, one of the core ideas of the Destination Oman editions is that tourism in Oman is flourishing. |
Destination Oman has come a long way since it came out with the first print edition in 2004. Initially, this book was inspired by the success of the website www.destinationoman.com that was launched in 2001.
It was the constant feedback from visitors requesting that a printed booklet be sent to them, that spurred the creation of this printed edition.
According to Deepak Nair, Destination Oman’s brainchild, “Oman is a land of abundant natural beauty and Destination Oman is a good effort at showcasing that beauty to people across the world. It’s a pictorial treatise on Oman that aims to tell the stories through pictures and subtexts”. |
 |
Every year Destination Oman takes a look at the most popular tourism destinations of Oman and also focuses on the new and emerging destinations.
 |
Oman is a haven of peace and tranquillity and Omanis are truly very hospitable people, which explains why an ever-increasing number of tourists flock to this beautiful Arab country which has been labelled as the ‘cultural capital’ and the ‘jewel of the Middle East’ on various occasions. |
The Ministry of Tourism in Oman has been buoyant and optimistic about the future.
Many new star hotels have come up to cater to the growing number of tourists. Five new airports are coming up in locations like Adam in Dakhiliyah, Ras al Hadd in Sharqiyah, Sohar in Al Batinah region and Duqm in Al Wusta region.
The existing airports at Muscat and Salalah are being expanded too. All this will add to the already world-class infrastructure in Oman and will go a long way in boosting tourism further.
Some of the stories and pictures in this book are made up of readers’ contributions. Readers write to Destination Oman about their touring experiencesand feel free to share their stories and pictures with fellow tourists and readers.
The 2011 edition of Destination Oman focuses on the beauty and charm of Muscat and sheds light on the Jalali and Mirani forts, Al Alam Palace, parks, gardens, museums and beaches in the capital city. |
 |
The magazine also features Al Hazm Castle, Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, Muttrah Souq, Marina Bandar al Rowdha, and most importantly Salalah.
 |
With Salalah Tourism Festival round the corner, readers would like to have a look at the charms of Salalah.
The 2011 edition also contains articles on the frankincense — the scent of Oman; Wadi Shuwaymiyah — the most spectacular wadi in southern Oman, trekking through Jabal Akhdar, Musandam — the Paradise Peninsula, and many other interesting features.

English couple Gwen and Tom Kinghorn while surfing the Web to find a place for their annual holiday came across www.destinationoman.com, the Web portal on Oman tourism, on the first page of Google and went through the whole site and decided that this time they were heading to Oman for their annual vacation. They immediately sent a mail from the contact form of DestinationOman seeking help and suggestions in making their trip memorable, according to a press release.
The staff at DestinationOman reverted back with their suggestions and also recommended the hotels where they could consider staying, the places they could visit and tour operators who could give them a good deal among others. Based on these inputs, Gwen and Tom came to Oman for a week’s holiday booked through Cox and Kings travel agents and stayed at Barr Al Jissah Shangri-La in Muscat from where they went around Oman using the services of Zahara Tours. At the end of their holiday, they called DestinationOman office to thank the team for making their holiday a memorable one. They also requested for a few copies of DestinationOman print edition, that they could keep as a souvenir and also gift to their friends. They also contributed the pictures they took of the tourist attractions in Oman to DestinationOman.
Another Australian couple, Barbara and David, also visited Oman for a week’s holiday inspired by DestinationOman Web portal that enjoys high ranking and visibility on major search engines like Google.
To complement the website, and due to constant requests from the visitors to the portal, DestinationOman annual print edition was launched in 2004. Since, then every year the book that is pictorial treatise on Oman has established itself as one of the popular guides on Oman tourism.

Dr. Rajiha bint Abdulameer bin Ali, Minister of Tourism receives the first copy of DestinationOman 2011 from Deepak Nair, the founder of this publication. |
| |
The sixth annual print edition of one of the Sultanate’s most popular tourism publication DestinationOman has been launched by Dr Rajha bint Abdulameer bin Ali, Minister of Tourism, coinciding with the onset of Khareef season in Oman.
The colourful book which is a pictorial treatise, that is rich in content, has grown in popularity over the years and is considered as a reliable source of information on Oman tourism. Acclaimed international photographers Jaap Croese and Paulo Bizarro share their talent in the new edition with some spectacular photographs of the Sultanate, along with other equally fascinating pictures credited to Bait Al Zubair, and the book’s founder Deepak Nair who conceived this much sought after publication in 2004.
In a foreword to the publication the minister says: “The Sultanate of Oman is now labelled as one of the most interesting countries anyone would like to visit and explore, for its culture, customs, traditions and natural beauty. Tourism, though a relatively recent development here has made great strides in a short period and is poised to contribute to the national economy in a big way in the coming days.”
She observed: “Oman has a rich cultural heritage dating back to thousands of years and Omani merchants had built ships and sailed to unknown distant lands for trade centuries back. It has developed its own arts, crafts and architecture. The famed historical forts and castles of Oman are testimonials to the architectural splendour of a bygone era. The traditional Arab hospitality extended by Omanis to guests from all parts of the world is well known and continues as a timeless tradition. Moreover, it is one of the safest destinations in the world for tourists from the far and the near.”
Outlining the Sultanate’s ongoing strategy to promote tourism, the minister said: “Presently several massive tourism projects including the integrated tourism projects with its malls, golf courses, hotels, marinas and parks are under way in Oman and many of them are expected to be complete in a few years. Huge funds are being pumped into various infrastructure projects to facilitate the growth of tourism industry. The capital city of Muscat is linked with several capital cities around the world by direct flights. Existing airports are being expanded and new airports are coming up in different parts of the country.”
“Oman has numerous internationally acclaimed resorts and hotels and that have won several awards from various international bodies, including Arab Ministerial Council for Tourism. Oman is on the way to emerge as a high quality tourism destination promoting responsible tourism. Meanwhile, growth of tourism industry will create innumerable job opportunities to the nationals”, Dr Rajha further noted.
In an introduction, Deepak Nair who founded the webportalwww.destinationoman.com that led to birth of the print edition in 2004 says: “It is six years since the first issue of the annual print edition of DestinationOman was published in 2004. Since then, I would imagine the popularity of the Sultanate of Oman has grown tremendously, so much that people all over the world are now more aware of this lovely country of the Arab world that still preserves its rich tapestry of culture and traditions, while embracing modern conveniences and technologies.”
Deepak Nair revealed he got a lot of positive feedback from the readers of DestinationOman, and many have shared their travel experiences in Oman with him and through their stories and photo contributions, which was definitely very welcome.
“Every visitor to Oman takes back fond memories and many come back again to savour the same hospitality and abundant natural beauty of the country”, he concluded.
DestinationOman print edition is widely distributed in the country and abroad through a chain of bookshops across Oman, GCC and parts of Europe. It is also distributed at international travel exhibitions, apart from being made available at premier restaurants, star hotels, embassies/consulates, and major tourism establishments, institutions and corporate offices across the count

DestinationOman website wins Bronze at Oman Web Awards
One of Sultanate’s most popular tourism websites www.destinationoman.com has won the Bronze Award in the Travel & Tourism category at the fourth edition of Oman Web Awards held at Al Bustan Palace hotel yesterday evening.
The website that was founded in 2001 by Deepak Nair, an Indian entrepreneur and long time resident of the Sultanate, usually shows up right on the first page, of all major search engines, like Google, Yahoo, etc, when a search for Oman or Oman travel related categories is fired. The website has all relevant information that a potential tourist to Oman would desire, like information on obtaining visas, a comprehensive listing of hotels, tour operators, airlines, rent-a-car firms, restaurants, banks, money exchange houses, places of tourist interests, how to get there, what to do, etc.
Speaking on the occasion Deepak Nair, the founder of the website said: “We have participated in Oman Web Awards only twice in the past 4 years and have won an award on both occasions that we participated in. There was stiff competition this time, as there were 13 sites in the Travel & Tourism category alone. This award will surely help us in our initiative to get Oman tourism’s potential greater recognition worldwide.”
The numerous enquires from visitors to the website spurred Deepak in bringing out an annual publication by the same name. The publication DestinationOman launched in 2004 is into its fifth edition now.
DestinationOman website is executed by InteracOman headed by Deepak Nair, that has over a hundred and fifty Omani websites in its portfolio.
